......Adventures of a wayward woodland wanderer.....
|
Sipsey Wilderness Area/Bankhead National Forest, AL
Land of a thousand waterfalls, you have my heart. Well, whatever part my wife didn't stake claim to. Bad analogy. Anyway,
this is THE place in Alabama if you're a waterfall junkie....but you have to get off trail. Enjoy the Sipsey River and Borden
Creek Trails for what they're worth. Enjoy Fall Creek Falls and it's overcrowdedness and destruction from a lot of thoughtless
people. If you want the adventure, get a map and leave the clear paths behind.

Noxubee Wildlife Refuge, Mississippi
Mosquito infested, stinking water stirring swampland...I love you, man. There, I said it. The Beaverdam Trail
remains one of my favorite trails of anywhere I've hiked. It's 2 miles [short, sure], but it's worth the walk in the woods.
With Cypress trees galore, and nesting bald eagles, Noxubee is the spot to hike if you're in east central Mississippi.
|
Cheaha Wilderness Area/Talladega National Forest, AL
Probably the favorite camping spot of the Muddy Boot Clan, and compared to the flatlands of Mississippi where
a lot of them still reside, this place is nothing but eye candy. Waterfalls are few and far between here, but what's
there is nice, and the solitude you get from hiking some of these knee pounding side trails is worth it. And then there
are the views, oh the views.
|
Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, AL
Reminds me a lot of the Noxubee Refuge, but not near as wooded and the trails aren't quite as nice, nor as expansive.
The refuge itself is a bit split up, which hampers things further. I still go a lot, mainly for the bird
viewing opportunities in winter and the blooming of the lilypads in the summer.

Monte Sano State Park/Land Trust Preserve, AL
This state park was one of the first places I started exploring when I moved to the Huntsville area.
There are many many miles of trail here, and a lot I haven't seen yet. There is also the nearby Land Trust Preserve,
which I'm more fond of. A little more strenuous hiking, but less crowded and a lot less disturbed.
